Njörd was said to reside in Nóatún, which was located next to the sea. Her father was Njörd (Old Norse: Njörðr) the god of the sea who oversaw the sea, wind and wealth. The manufacture of flax was a woman’s role and was largely associated with weddings because linen was used to make bridal dresses. The link here may be the fact that in Scandinavian culture, linen was an important product which was believed to prevent evil and provide fertility. The name Sýr is sometimes translated to “sow,” but could also mean “to shield” or “protect,” while the name Hörn most likely comes from the Old Norse Horr which translates to “flax” or “linen.” Others think it may be related to the words Brosinga mene from the Beowulf poem.įreya was also known by four other nicknames - Mardöll, Hörn, Gefn, and Sýr. She also owned a necklace named Brísingamen, connected to a story involving the mischievous god Loki. Ellis Davidson also links Freya to horses and argues that they were particularly associated with the goddess and were kept in her holy places. Her brother Freyre was also said to own a boar named Gullinborsti. ![]() Freya was also associated with witchcraft and some myths record her teaching the practice to the Norse Aesir gods.Įvidence for the boar comes from the Hyndluljóð, an ancient Norse poem, which names the animal Hildisvíni. ![]() That doesn’t mean the game is quick, though. ![]() Thankfully, menu options meant I could hasten process slightly: I lasted about three hours into a career mode before I turned off cinematic attack animations entirely, slightly sad to be missing close-up shots of laser cannon explosions and front-row seats at mega-ultra-super-heavyweight boxing matches, but pleased to be gaining full hours of my life back. It wasn’t just the story at launch that was slow, but that the stodginess had extended into the game’s turn-based battles themselves, with the game's insistence on showing the arc and effect of each mech fusillade slowing fights to a crawl. The addition gives BattleTech an immediate replay value that its vanilla version lacked at launch, when players had to run through the slow-starting story every time they wanted to test their metal mettle. From there, it’s a freelancer’s life: hopping between planets to keep coffers full, mechs maintained, and pilots happy. RPG-esque conversational choices exist, but more often than not I found myself brainlessly clicking through dialogue trees just to get to the next mission, my brain too full of confederacies and protectorates to track who I was fighting for in the coming robo rumbles, let alone care how I answered their request for aid.įortunately, the game’s career mode, added in November last year, strips out this storyline, hands you the keys to a squad of randomly assigned mechs, and fires you and your dropshop off into a random star system. That history hangs heavy: there’s more than a thousand years of it supporting BattleTech’s 31st century, developed over the 30 real-world years that have passed since the tabletop game of the (eventual) same name first arrived.įor MechWarrior die-hards the lore baked into campaign mode will thrill, but playing through the story now, I found that the dialogue stodgy. ![]() Its menus are spartan, its universe is dense with hegemonies, dynasties, and republics, and its conversations are peppered with so many references to imagined history that several require their own mouseover tooltips. Two new DLC packs have been released over the past year since BattleTech’s PC launch, with another scheduled to arrive this winter, and the developer has kept pace with free updates, too, smoothing out the overall experience.īut for a game about giant robo people with guns for arms, guns for shoulders, and sometimes even guns for chests, BattleTech remains surprisingly stony-faced in its presentation. It was those rockin’, sockin’, shootin’ robots that helped make BattleTech, Harebrained Schemes’ turn-based strategy take on the venerable series of the same name, worth dipping into when it launched last April. And if they could like, punch real good, and when they punch - or after they punch - they shoot the enemies with lasers again. Or, at least, not properly fly, but jump over stuff with rocket boots, and sometimes kick stuff after they rocket jump. Much more fun imagining that those metal people can fly. Nobody wants to think about the next evolution of guided missiles that kill children when they could be thinking about huge giant metal people that have like, guns for hands and lasers on their shoulders. Maybe that’s why we as a species are so stuck on the concept of mechs: if we think about future warfare, all we can imagine is “BIGGER PEOPLE!” “If I had asked people what they wanted,” father of the assembly line and horrible anti-semite Henry Ford supposedly said, “they would have said faster horses.” As cool as nitrous-enabled horses sound, I think old Hitler-fancier Ford was trying to insinuate that the masses can’t imagine the next technological revolution they can only think of a better version of what they’ve got. Alia was pure and heartbreaking, she performed it from a place of honesty, so much so that you felt like she was still a child when she did that. Both crucial segments, Mahabir one more so because that’s when the audience also gets to know her backstory in all its painful detail for the first time. Now, the scenes there are two sequences where she finally tells her truth regarding the sexual abuse she faced as a child - one, where she speaks about it to Mahabir, and then when Mahabir has died, and she yells out her ordeal in front of her parents and the abuser. You could see that the script was inconsistent somewhere, but Alia gave all of herself to Veera. You could see that sometimes it was not as effortless, but you could also see real, genuine talent. It seemed to come out of her more organically than the Bollywood spectacle that was Student of the Year. It was not one of those performances where you thought, ‘Is this really her second film, she is already acting like a mature artiste, like she has been around for years.’ No, Alia as Veera felt raw, instinctual and sincere. According to society, ‘Veera’s life was set.’ But then a few days before the D-day, Veera is kidnapped by Randeep’s Mahabir and things change forever. Veera had loving parents, she came from wealth, she was soon going to marry a good-looking young man. The fatigue from travelling plus the mismatch with local time can leave you ready to fall asleep just after lunch, or being wide awake in the middle of the night, knowing that dawn is still several hours away. Jet lag is also compounded by the fact that long hours spent on a plane can cause you to sleep too much, or not enough, possibly at the wrong time of day relative to where you departed from. Whereas, waffle formworks are designed in such a way that they could be removed after the concrete is hardened, and reused elsewhere. Uboot and Cobiax molds are buried inside the slab and they can’t be used anymore. The main difference between these types of molds and waffle formworks is being reusable. Differences between waffle formworks and U-boot and Cobiax moldsĪs mentioned before, many other solutions such as U-boot, Cobiax, and Bubble Deck molds are used to remove the un-working part of concrete. The name waffle comes from the grid pattern created by the reinforcing ribs. One of the most widely used solutions is the plastic waffle mold which is made of polypropylene and can be used several times. In the last decade, various ideas have been proposed to remove this unused part of the concrete, but only a few of them have been implemented. Removing the unused part of the concrete will provide lighter and more economic slabs than an equivalent flat slab. Since the tensile strength of concrete is mainly satisfied by the steel bar reinforcement, only the ribs containing the reinforcement are kept where the remaining unused concrete portion below the neutral axis is removed, to reduce the self-weight of the slab. Utilizing these formworks will omit the unused part of the slab. Waffle molds are made from plastic and available in different standard sizes. In the following, types of waffle molds and their dimensions, application, and the price will be presented.
